Our beloved little doxie Dolly Mae experienced a sudden health emergency after fainting and struggling to breathe the other day. We rushed her to the emergency vet where we received some tough news.
Dolly was diagnosed with significant heart disease caused by a degenerative valve in her heart. This condition led to a large amount of fluid backup into her lungs, which is why she collapsed and was having difficulty breathing. While heart disease isn't curable, it can be managed with proper treatment and medications.
The vet decided to keep Dolly for monitoring and to administer intravenous Lasix (a diuretic) to help remove the fluid from her lungs and improve her breathing. She was also kept in the oxygen chamber during her entire stay. The treatment worked, and she was sent home early this morning, but the vet bill was $3k — way more than we were expecting. Dolly was our first baby and is a part of our family. She’s been with us through many ups and downs; many moves, our marriage, infertility, bringing two babies home, mourning and even losing her brother Cooper. She is our world. She is a lively little firecracker who we call "Nurse Dolly" because she stays by our side whenever anyone in the family is sick, refusing to leave except for bathroom breaks. Now it's our turn to take care of her. She will need to be on oral medications now to support her heart, and she will also need regular echocardiograms and follow-up appointments for the duration of her life.
We are asking if anyone has the ability to donate something, any contribution, no matter how small, will hopefully help us cover the cost of this medical stay and kickstart the cost of the meds she needs to keep her here with us.
Thank you for helping us save our sweet Dolly Mae
