My name is DJ, and I’m an anthropologist specializing in paleogenomics, currently in my last year of college. Just three months ago, I was diagnosed with leukemia. Since then, my life has changed dramatically. I’m now three months into treatment, and the side effects have made it nearly impossible to keep up with my classes and research. The mental fog and physical exhaustion have slowed my academic progress, and getting to work or class is a daily struggle.
Most of my medical expenses are from ongoing treatments and frequent hospital visits. I’m part of a research team that’s been very understanding, but my income from that position will only last for a few more weeks. I can’t take on any other work right now, and my living expenses have become a burden on my dad, who’s doing everything he can to help me graduate debt free. My savings are almost gone, and I’m relying on family support to get by.
My biggest fear is not being able to afford tuition or rent while I fight this disease. The financial stress has only added to the pain and uncertainty of my diagnosis. I’m reaching out for help so I can focus on my health and education, and hopefully finish my degree without the weight of overwhelming debt. Any support will go directly toward my medical bills, tuition, and living expenses during this difficult time.
I have found that I do not qualify for the hospital to wave the fees for a low income college student fighting cancer. Treating cancer has been the most expensive and challenging thing I have gone through in my life. Even with all the challenges ahead of me I am persevering I have successfully completed my summer research, and presented it. Now I am set to present my research 3 more times come October. This fall I will apply to PhD programs and all the support that can be given and has been given has been and will be unbelievably helpful as I traverse the next scary but exciting stages of my life.
