I am writing on behalf of my friend Djay (they/them) who is moving forward with getting top surgery before they turn 50, a desire they had never thought would be possible.

Djay has historically had to navigate many challenges throughout life, including navigating their gender identity. Djay does not have the desire to fully transition, and when they were younger, they did not realize that top surgery without also modifying hormones was a possibility. So Djay convinced themselves to accept their body as it was, boobs and all. This acceptance was an illusion, and in addition to grappling with undiagnosed bipolar disorder, Djay went down a decades-long path of drug use as a means of numbing themselves from their childhood trauma, mental instability and gender dysphoria.

Djay has come a long way since those self destructive days. They have been sober for 18 years and are effectively managing their bipolar disorder. This has allowed Djay to come to the place of wanting to live their truth and top surgery is a vital step in that journey. This decision will greatly improve their mental well-being and quality of life, as well as align their body with who they really are and find greater peace and confidence. Additionally, Djay is a high risk category for breast cancer, so this surgery also serves as a preventative measure to avoid that.

Insurance is not a possibility for Djay, and in addition to savings they plan to get a loan, but they cannot qualify for enough to cover the surgery and aftercare. It is really difficult to ask for help, as many people face struggles and financial insecurity. Djay would be grateful for any support towards this life-changing step toward living fully as their authentic self, even if it is just sharing this fundraiser. Thank you!
