Support Dionne’s Journey to Ivy League Success

Hi everyone, my name is Dionne Elisondo-Chavez, and I am a dedicated student from Watsonville, California who deeply values education, family, and my future. Growing up, I witnessed how hard my grandparents and parents worked so that I could have opportunities they never had. Their sacrifices are the reason I take school seriously and push myself every day. Because of them, I aspire to study political science on the East Coast and eventually attend law school. My long-term goal is to become a human rights lawyer so I can advocate for communities like my own and support people who are often overlooked.
I was one of 14 students selected from two high schools for the 2026 program. Students were recruited from Watsonville High School and Pajaro Valley High School, both under-resourced schools, and only sophomores and juniors with a GPA of at least 3.75 were invited to apply. Getting into WILP was a serious process, similar to applying to college. I had to complete an application, write a personal essay, ask a teacher for a recommendation, and interview with a selection committee. The whole process was intense and nerve-wracking, but it showed me how meaningful the opportunity really was.
Since 2007, 19 out of 164 WILP participants have attended or are currently attending Ivy League schools, representing an 11.59% acceptance rate. By comparison, the average Ivy League acceptance rate for the Class of 2026 was 5.22%. These results show that WILP students earn Ivy League opportunities at more than double the general admit rate. This shows how effectively the program prepares students from backgrounds like mine for highly selective college admissions.
Academically, I challenge myself through honors and advanced courses, such as AP Spanish Lang and Honors Chemistry, and maintain a 4.0 unweighted and 4.28 weighted GPA. One of the most meaningful achievements of my high school experience was getting accepted into the Watsonville Ivy League Project (WILP). It showed me that hard work truly opens doors. Through WILP, I will explore potential universities, connect with mentors, and build confidence in my academic potential.
Sports also play an essential role in shaping who I am. I have played volleyball since sixth grade and currently compete as an Outside Hitter and Defensive Specialist. I am also one of two team captains for my high school volleyball team, which has taught me leadership, adaptability, and how to support teammates in high-pressure situations. By doing so, I earned MVP honors for my team and won Offensive Player of the Year. In addition, I play center field for my school’s softball team, where I have worked hard to improve my catching and fielding skills while learning the importance of teamwork and trust.
Creativity is another way I express myself. I have played the clarinet for five years and the bass clarinet for one year, and I am a member of my school’s Wind Ensemble and Competition Band. Music has taught me patience, discipline, and strong practice habits. Outside of music, I enjoy drawing, painting, and writing poetry, and I approach my work thoughtfully, making sure I focus on learning rather than just completing tasks.
To participate fully in the Watsonville Ivy League Project, I am raising $3,700 to cover travel, lodging, food, and program expenses. This support will allow me to visit East Coast campuses, speak directly with admissions officers, and gain valuable insight into becoming a competitive applicant at top universities.
Every donation, no matter the amount, directly supports my educational journey and helps make this opportunity possible. Even sharing my fundraiser makes a meaningful difference. Thank you for taking the time to support my goals and for believing in my future. I am truly grateful to everyone who is helping me take this next step forward.
