As many of you know, I was diagnosed with Nasopharyngeal Cancer in March of 2006. After having my teeth removed and then enduring over fourteen months of radiation and chemotherapy, I trusted the Lord and five years later I was told I was cancer-free.
Now, eighteen years later, I am facing cancer again. After months of tests and surgery, we've learned that this is not a recurrence of my previous cancer but a completely different one, with a tumor that cannot be removed. Because of its location, surgery is not an option. My ENT, along with a team of specialists from leading cancer centers across the U.S., all agree that Proton Therapy is my only course of treatment.
My Proton Therapy will take place at OU Stephenson Cancer Center in Oklahoma City. The American Cancer Society may provide a room for us at Hope Lodge at no cost, which is a blessing, but they do not provide meals, transportation, or other daily necessities. Additionally, the lodge requires that I have a full-time caregiver while having treatment - Chris (my husband) will be by my side.
My first appointment to meet with the team is on April 16th, at which time I will also have a CT Scan for the markers to be determined. Proton Therapy will begin about the first of May, and will be every weekday for at least eight weeks. With the follow-up appointments after treatment, we anticipate being in Oklahoma City for three to four months. During this time, Chris will be unable to work, and we are facing a significant financial burden. While my Medi-Care and Indian Health coverage will help with the medical costs, we are deeply concerned about covering our mortgage, insurance, utilities, food, gasoline, travel and other essential living expenses.
We have never asked for financial help before, and it is difficult to do so now - but this is our reality. Without support, we simply don't know how we will manage. The Hope Lodge requires that I have a caregiver, and without support, I will not have one.
We are not asking for a handout - we are asking for a hand. Any amount, no matter how small, will help relieve some of the strain during this difficult time so we can focus on what truly matters - my recovery. If you are able to help, we are forever grateful. If you aren't in a position to give, we completely understand and ask that you please keep me (us) in your prayers and share this link with others.
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you and God Bless.
