Hello everyone,

My name is Dexter Fletcher, and I am a photographer, filmmaker, visual artist, and storyteller. I am currently working toward filmmaking more consistently. I am writing to inquire about the possibility of receiving support in the form of a donation towards a camera. This would meaningfully impact my ability to create and sustain my work as an artist. In particular, I am most urgently in need of a cinema camera (Canon C50) for developing my projects. This particular camera would help significantly because I already have lenses, and the technology in this camera is current and so would last a very long time.

I currently drive for Uber six to seven days a week, and while the work is demanding, it has deepened my commitment to filmmaking. Every day I encounter people from all walks of life with intriguing stories; behind the wheel, I’ve heard countless tales and witnessed the true tapestry of America. These experiences continually remind me why I am passionate about storytelling. After all, human beings are all compilations of intertwined stories.

My interest in people and their stories is rooted in my own journey as an immigrant from Jamaica. I originally came to the United States to pursue opportunities in photography, spending time on both the East and West coasts. The evolution from still photography to cinematography is a natural one—transforming my love for capturing the single moment into capturing the movement and emotion within it.

Though Jamaica is a small island, its cultural influence is vast. Music and cuisine are two examples... I see myself as one artist from this powerful lineage, determined to contribute meaningfully to the world’s creative landscape.

Alongside my work with Uber, I continue to take freelance photography assignments and have volunteered with UCLA Film School for the past five years, supporting both undergraduate and graduate student projects. These experiences have sharpened my skills, strengthened my commitment to my craft, and reaffirmed my belief in the importance of community within the arts.

I believe deeply in the need to diversify the voices shaping the Hollywood narrative. Listening to stories—truly listening—is at the heart of great filmmaking. I bring a unique perspective informed by my background, my travels, my work, and the many people I meet every day. The camera I am requesting would give me the foundation I need to continue developing my voice and sharing stories that might otherwise go untold.
