Support Dewey’s Leukemia Battle

DeWayne “Dewey” Chandler was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia on October 8, 2022. He is the best husband, father of five, and waiter you could ask for — any customer you’d meet would say the same. Dewey has customers he’s been serving for over 20 years. On top of that he has the biggest heart, life of the party, funniest dad you will ever meet, and willing to help anyone that needs it. His home is an open door to everyone, he’s let so many friends/family live within his own home. If you’ve met Dewey you’re immediately immersed in his infectious personality and genuine love, he turns you into family instantly. Family is so important to Dewey and he’s all about making sure to include everyone right down to his own friends, and his children’s friends. This is why it’s so important for us to come together to do the same for him.

He started not feeling well about a month ago. He had shortness of breath, fatigue, and extremely weak. He had been going to different doctors to find a diagnosis to why he had been feeling this way but continued to run into dead ends with no answers.

He missed the last two weeks of work and for the last month was working sporadically. He had to go back to work last Sunday due to financial strain. He couldn’t make it through the whole shift and had to leave work abruptly to go to Sunrise (on October 2, 2022) and after many tests he was diagnosed with AML.

He is having his port put in tomorrow October 10 and will begin extremely aggressive chemo on Tuesday October 11. He will have a minimum stay of 30 days in the hospital, will go back home and have to come back to the hospital every 21 days for seven days at a time. This will continue for at least a year. Dewey will also need a bone marrow transplant during treatment as the cancer cells are 60 percent in his bone marrow.

We are asking for support during this time as his wife Melissa Chandler will not be able to work due to being his full time caretaker. Dewey will also not be able to work while undergoing his aggressive treatment. He is someone that would never ask for assistance but during this journey he will need help from his family and friends as he is still supporting three children at home. We truly appreciate all your support during this fight against cancer because he’s in there giving his best fight (laughing, being positive, and being Dewey!!!!) Absolutely anything helps please share and spread his story!!!!!
