Devonte is a loving 3-year-old boy who had an accident last week and got 2nd and 3rd degree burns on 15% of his body.
He will go into surgery Monday morning to have his bandages removed, wounds scrubbed, and redressed. We will find out the extent of the damage then.
For those that do not know his history, he was born with 2 holes in his heart and has been treated for heart failure since he was 1 month old. The stress of his body healing his burns has started affecting his heart. His heart rate is elevated (around 150, 140 at rest), respirations staying in the 30s, and he has now had a fever for 3 days. Cardiology will be going in with them to surgery tomorrow to get an echo of his heart to try to find out what is going on. We are hoping the elevations in vitals are due to being in pain and not his heart failure worsening.
He will also not eat or drink. They placed an NJ tube for feeding. They were just doing it at night, but today they had to change it to 3 times a day because he has lost 5% of his body weight already. These feeds are very uncomfortable for him due to them having to place the tube below his stomach and into the jejunum (part of the small intestines) due to his reflux.
To top it all off, the wound swab they did yesterday to check for infection came back with moderate growth of staph. We are waiting for the sensitivity report to come back to see if it is resistant or not so they can start treatment.
This is going to be a very long and difficult journey for the family. Devonte's mom, Lillian, and her husband also have a 2-year-old daughter to care for. Lillian has not left Devonte's side since the ambulance arrived on Wednesday. We have no idea when she will be able to return to work, and her husband is having to miss work to care for their daughter.
We are fundraising to support Devonte's household expenses and any medical costs that arrise so that his parents can take care of their children during this challenging time.
