Support Devon on the Road to Recovery

While working on a solar installation in southern Colorado on the afternoon of Friday, May 20, 2022, my friend and colleague Devon suffered an electrical shock resulting in severe burns to his arms, legs, hands, and feet. While moving materials to the roof, Devon contacted an overhead utility line that was energized at 14,000 volts. He was immediately surrounded and comforted by his teammates. After waiting for paramedics and utility personnel to secure the scene, he was rushed to nearby Conejos County Hospital in La Jara, CO. Though his condition was stable, it was necessary to transfer Devon as soon as possible to the Burn Center at UCHealth at Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, CO. A late May snowstorm in the Denver area and high winds near La Jara precluded the option of a medevac. As a result, Devon waited hours for the 5-plus-hour ambulance trip to go ahead. He eventually arrived at the Burn Center's ICU at about 5 a.m. Saturday morning. His doctors then made a fuller but still incomplete evaluation of his injuries and estimated his hospital stay at 50-80 days. With one surgery done and another scheduled for Tuesday, May 24, Devon's path to recovery remains daunting. Moving forward, we will update this page with the results of that surgery and all other relevant news.

On a positive note, I want to tell you that Devon is undoubtedly one of the strongest people I know. He is incredibly kind, smart, funny, and humble. He is an amazing son, father, friend and co-worker. Those who know Devon know very well how lucky they are to have him in their lives. With that in mind, I'm optimistic that his community will come together to show Devon all the love and support we can. He needs us to.

The financial burden resulting from Devon's treatment and recovery, combined with the loss of income he and his partner, Dalese, will experience through this process, will be significant. Our goal is to offset as much of this burden as possible and to create a system of sustained support for Devon and his family during this difficult time.
