Support Desiree Mendez's University Dream

Hello, everyone! My name is Desiree Mendez, and I'm reaching out to share my story and ask for your support as I embark on an exciting new chapter in my life.
After taking two gap years, I am thrilled to announce that I have been accepted into Vermont State University's communications B.A. program. This opportunity means a lot to me—it's not just about pursuing academics, but about transforming my passion for the creative process into a fulfilling career. The program offers concentrations in cinema studies and production, journalism, and new media, aligning perfectly with my interests. Additionally, I'm excited to have the chance to compete for their track & field team, combining my love for athletics with my academic pursuits.
However, my journey to this point has been marked by significant challenges. At the age of six, I was removed from my parent's custody due to their struggles with addiction and their neglect and abuse towards me. Thankfully, my grandparents stepped in to provide a stable and loving home. Despite their support, hardships persisted, as we struggled financially and my grandparents battled with various health issues. Additionally, parental visitations brought more harm than good, to the extent of the need for interventions by law enforcement. Sadly, I lost my grandmother to breast cancer during my junior year in 2020, leaving my grandfather as my sole guardian.
Despite these adversities, I've remained resolute in pursuing higher education and creating a brighter future for myself. Over the past two years, I've taken on various roles—as a waitress, cashier, and baker—to save money and gain valuable real-world experience.
Now, as I prepare to enroll in Vermont State University as an independent, low-income student, I find myself in need of a helping hand. I have not had communication with my parents in six years due to the substantial damage they have caused over the years. While my grandfather wholeheartedly supports my dream of attending college, he cannot provide financial assistance.
Your donation will not only help cover tuition, books, and living expenses but will also allow me to dedicate myself fully to my studies!
Every contribution, regardless of size, will make a meaningful impact on my journey. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for considering supporting me as I strive to further my education!
With much gratitude,
