If you know Derrick Banks, you know that music isn’t just something he teaches — it’s something he lives.

For 30 years, Mr. Banks has poured his heart into his students, his colleagues, and his community. As a beloved band director and lifelong musician, he has inspired countless young people to find confidence, discipline, joy, and belonging through music. Whether staying late after rehearsal, showing up early to fix an instrument, or offering encouragement when someone needed it most, Mr. Banks has always shown up — with patience, kindness, and unwavering dedication.

Beyond the classroom, Derrick is a devoted husband to his wife Helen, a loving father to their son D.J., a trusted colleague, and a loyal friend. He gives selflessly to others without ever asking for anything in return.

In January, Mr. Banks was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML), an aggressive form of blood cancer. Since then, he and his family have been navigating hospital stays, intensive treatments, and an uncertain road ahead. Through it all, he continues to face each day with courage, strength, and that infectious smile we have all come to know and love.

As you can imagine, the financial burden of AML treatment is overwhelming. Funds raised through this campaign will go directly toward ongoing hospital and treatment costs, transportation to and from medical appointments, health insurance premiums and related expenses, basic day-to-day expenses, and any unforeseen medical needs during treatment
