Support Derek's Recovery

Hi, this fundraiser is being organized by a small group of Derek's friends and family members to support his recovery from substance use disorder. My name is Jack, and I have enjoyed the immeasurable blessing of Derek's friendship for more than 20 years now. I've seen him in good times and bad, but I've never been as worried about him as I was last week, when he went missing for several days. Following a long and agonizing search, a friend was able to locate Derek, who had been sleeping outside, and bring him to a detox facility. Derek has since admitted that he needs help and has dedicated himself to continuing along the path of recovery.

Substance use disorder has impaired Derek's ability to maintain stable housing, employment, and health care. Though he is currently enrolling in MaineCare, his medical expenses are piling up fast. He is not in a position to pay out of pocket for the long-term treatment he needs. His family has been financially supporting Derek for several months, and they are quickly approaching the limits of their ability to do so. At this point, we feel we have no choice but to reach out to Derek's wide circle of friends and loved ones to ask for help. Donations received through this fundraiser will be managed by a small group of Derek's friends and family members to pay expenses directly related to his treatment.

The plan for the next chapter of Derek's recovery is still coming together, so I will update this section as we go. For now, here is a rough estimate of the costs:

7/6 UPDATE: Derek was discharged from detox yesterday and began the next chapter of his recovery at a residential treatment program. The out-of-pocket cost for this program is $7,800 per month. The situation remains fluid, but we anticipate that this phase of his recovery will last one-to-two months, after which he will transition to extended care.
