Support Derek Loffer's Road to Recovery
Donation protected
Hello all! My name is Tracy Adam, and I've created this account to raise funds to help Derek Loffer pay his monthly bills for a few months (rent, cellphone, groceries, fur baby expenses, child support, etc). With donations, I'm also hoping to decrease debt build-up during Derek's recovery.
Derek was involved in an accident on July 21, 2025. Derek had been hired to pull a 27-foot vendor trailer that travels annually with Ragbrai, here in Iowa, helps set up in each city they stop at, and sells their food to the riders & locals.
On that Monday, Derek picked up the trailer in Anamosa, was headed to Forest City, and the trailer blew a tire. Derek pulled off to the side of the road, onto the shoulder, set up 3 safety cones, got out the 3-ton jack, and completed the tire-changing process. He then dropped the jack down enough to be able to fully tighten the lug nuts when a semi hit the pole on the jack, going full speed. The pole hit Derek in the leg (as he was standing upright next to the jack) and flipped Derek over onto the ground.
Not in pain initially due to shock, Derek tried to walk it off when a very intense pain kicked in. The semi did not stop, there were no witnesses, and no way for Derek to get a look at the semi for a description to make a report with law enforcement.
Derek was able to limp back into his truck and drive the 2 hours remaining to Forest City. Unable to place any weight on his injured leg, he was transported to a hospital in Britt, IA, and given conflicting results from the radiologist and doctor. One thought he was fine and one thought there was a fracture on Derek's knee. Regardless, Derek's leg was placed in a full leg immobilizer sleeve and he was given crutches, as he was unable to walk. Derek's dad made the 3-hour trip to pick him up and bring him back home.
Once back in Cedar Rapids, Derek went to an ER for a 2nd opinion, and x-rays showed his fibula bone was broken. Once the swelling goes down, Derek will need an MRI, as the doctor believes there is ligament damage as well.
The fibula bone break will take 6-8 weeks to heal. This means Derek is unable to walk, drive, work, train, coach, or do his favorite leisure time activities. Whether alone, with friends, or with his 13-year-old son, Greyson, Derek spends the majority of his free time outdoors, fishing, magnet fishing, camping, boating, grilling, or playing sports. Derek also enjoys playing fetch with his never-tired furbaby, Deelo.
Anyone who knows Derek knows he's stubborn to a fault. He does not do well with asking or accepting help. However, Derek has given to others in so many ways over the past several years. Through 50/50 ticket sales at past Kickboxing shows he and his partners have put on, Derek has donated those profits to people he knew in need. For example, a family member of mine that had been battling cancer at that time (2018). He and his current gym partner (Loffer Kickboxing) together have hosted free Thanksgiving meals for the unhoused and anyone wanting a place to go for a meal, Back to School supplies donations event, and has never said no when I've asked him through the years to volunteer and donate his time, truck, and manpower to help clean up, help load, help move furniture, etc. for friends, family, and non-profit agencies I volunteered and/or worked at.
Please help by sharing and donating to help Derek through this recovery process. Thank you all so much!!!
