We're sharing this to ask for support for our dear friend Delia Reid as she begins a long recovery after a life-saving lung transplant.
Delia, our beloved friend, neighbor, and colleague-recently received a lung transplant after being diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease. Her family and friends have rallied around her, with her husband Tom and her best friend Caitlin taking leave from work to care for her.
This sudden medical crisis has brought significant financial strain. Delia is facing income loss along with major new expenses as she begins her healing journey. Funds raised will help cover medical costs and essential living and caregiving expenses, allowing Delia to focus on recovery without the added burden of financial stress.
Please feel free to share this page with others who may want to support Delia's healing journey. We have also created a CaringBridge page, where we will share updates and additional ways to help as new needs arise.
For those of you who haven't yet heard what happened, Delia began experiencing unusual symptoms in late September, including joint pain, painful rashes, extreme fatigue, and a persistent dry cough. After multiple visits to doctors, urgent care, and the ER, she was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease called dermatomyositis. It was quickly determined that she has a particularly rare and difficult-to-treat subtype.
Her condition progressed rapidly into aggressive interstitial lung disease. On November 24, Delia was admitted to the ICU at Kaiser. Despite multiple treatments, her health continued to decline. On December 2, she was transferred to UCSF, where she was placed at the top of the transplant list. On December 11, Delia successfully received a lung transplant.
We are deeply grateful that Delia is now in the care of one of the nation's premier lung transplant centers. The road ahead, however, will be long and demanding-for Delia and for those who love her.
These past weeks have been indescribably hard-not only because of the physical toll of this illness, but because Delia has always been the one offering care, love, and compassion to others. Suddenly needing this level of support is not something she ever imagined. Every donation, message, kind thought, and act of generosity matters. Delia will feel it, and it will help carry her forward in the days ahead.
