Friends of African Union Cemetery [Delaware]

Tax deductible
Your donation will support this restored cemetery and memorial plaza in Delaware City. In the 1800s the residents of nearby Polktown used this burial ground, the resting place for 5 US Colored Troops veterans and an unknown number of residents.

We have completed our video telling the story of this African American hamlet and its veterans. It will premiere in September. Here's our trailer:

James Elbert is one of five US Colored Troops buried in Delaware City's African Union Cemetery. Once forgotten, this small cemetery is now a memorial park. I’m the president of the board and I'm raising money to benefit our nonprofit, Friends of the African Union Cemetery Inc. Any donation will help us continue with educational programming about the soldiers, the Civil War experience of Pvt. James Elbert, and the social history of this forgotten Free Black settlement.
