Our beloved Deidre, a 33-year-old mother of four, is fighting for her life after suffering a ruptured AVM (arteriovenous malformation) that caused a severe brain bleed near her brainstem.

Just days after Thanksgiving, Deidre experienced severe head and neck pain and became unresponsive. Her husband rushed her to the emergency room, where a CT scan revealed a life-threatening brain bleed. Within hours, she was life-flighted to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh, where neurosurgeons performed emergency surgery to relieve the pressure on her brain. The doctors told us that if she had arrived just a couple hours later, this would have been fatal.

During the initial surgery, doctors removed part of her skull and placed a drain to help reduce swelling. She was placed on a ventilator, and an angiogram revealed the ruptured AVM that caused this crisis. Now, Deidre faces another serious brain surgery to remove the AVM completely. The doctors need to wait for the swelling to go down and for the affected area to consolidate before they can safely operate. She will remain in the Neuro ICU for an extended period, followed by a long recovery that will likely take weeks or months.

While Deidre fights this battle, her husband is by her side every waking moment in the ICU. Their four young children are separated from their mama during what should be a magical time of year. Christmas is just weeks away, and these little ones are facing it without the parent who usually brings all the magic and joy to their home.
