Our family is asking for help for Debra, our beloved mother/cousin/niece/friend, a person known for her warmth, generosity, and an infectious laugh that lights up every room.
Debra loves to talk, to connect, and to care for people. You can always count on her to check in, help out, cook for others when they are ill, and show up, even when she herself is not feeling well. For many years, she has been an active and devoted member of the Lupus Association, offering encouragement and understanding to others who, like her, are living with this chronic illness.
Recently, Debra suffered an acute ischemic stroke. During her hospital admission, doctors discovered serious heart concerns, which, upon further testing, revealed a dangerously dilated aorta and confirmed a life-threatening aortic dissection extending through multiple sections of her aorta. As a rare complication of this condition, Debra has lost her voice. For someone whose joy comes from conversation and laughter, this has been especially difficult.
Because of the complexity and urgency of her condition, Debra must undergo specialized cardiac surgery in Martinique, as this level of care is not available in her home St. Lucia. The hospital has quoted €35,800 (US$39,000) for 8 days of inpatient care, which does not include pre-operative testing, medications, post-operative or extended care, air travel between islands, accommodation, or the costs for a required companion. Debra can't make this journey alone and will need someone by her side throughout travel, hospitalization, and recovery.
We are starting with a conservative goal and may adjust it as expenses become clearer.
Debra is a devoted mother to her son, a source of comfort and support to her family, and someone who loves caring for others. This surgery is life-saving and time-sensitive.
We are asking, with gratitude and hope, for help covering the medical and travel costs so Debra can receive the care she urgently needs. Any amount makes a difference, and sharing this page is a meaningful way to help. I’m managing the fundraiser and receiving donations, and transferring funds to Debra intermittently to cover medical expenses.
Thank you for standing with Debra and for helping give her the chance to heal—and, we hope, to one day speak and laugh freely again.
