Hi, my name is Devin May. First, I would like to apologize if this is how you're learning of this news. Recently my mom (Deborah May) had a severe stroke. The stroke primarily impacted her memory, vision, coordination, and speech. She often has difficulty remembering how to accomplish basic tasks even after being shown how to do them, she loses balance regularly, she needs help reading things that aren’t written in very large text, and she often struggles to speak without stuttering or losing her words. Based on what the doctors said, with how bad this stroke was, it’s sort of a miracle that she’s even still alive, let alone the fact that she was able to come home instead of being in a long term care facility.
As soon as we noticed symptoms I rushed her to the hospital. The closest hospital, Antelope Valley Medical Center, was the first hospital we went to. I believe she was severely mistreated at AVMC. We then took her to Henry Mayo hospital in Santa Clarita, and she was treated much better there. Unfortunately, during her time at AVMC she had caught the flu, and during her time at Henry Mayo she had to be treated for that as well, which lengthened her stay at the hospital by quite a bit.
Eventually, after just under three weeks of hospitalization, she stabilized enough for the doctors to sign off on her discharge paperwork and we went home. Since then, she has been working on her recovery. Unfortunately, this stroke has taken away my mom's ability to work. I was also fired from AVMC because of this incident, and as a result I am unable to support my mother financially at this time. We have medical bills for everything her insurance wouldn’t cover breathing down our necks with no means of paying for them, and on top of that we still have to find a way to pay for basic survival.
I have come to you all to ask for help. I’m hoping that through the generosity of the many people who care about my mother and I, we can get by until we’ve managed to get other streams of income situated. We’re working on getting her on disability, and I’m trying to find a new job, but as I’m sure you know those things don’t happen overnight. I love my mom more than words can express, and I’m doing everything I can to help her, but I can’t do this alone. Anything you can offer would be a tremendous help and we would greatly appreciate it.
