My name is Andrea, and I’ve been friends with Debbie for 35 years - she is truly our family. For as long as I’ve known her, Debbie has always been the one who shows up for others, caring for people quietly and faithfully, never asking for anything in return. She has been independent and on her own for her entire life. That’s why this is so hard: asking for help is the very last thing she ever wanted to do.
Since 2020, Debbie has been living with painful nodules that keep multiplying, while also facing ovarian cancer and an autoimmune disease. While showing immense strength, these past 5 years have taken a huge toll on her health, emotions and quality of life, leaving her unable to work for the past 3 years.
She has tried everything available here in Canada, but her doctors have reached the limits of what they can do. Due to this, she’s now been referred to the Mayo Clinic in Florida - and accepted quickly, with her appointments beginning October 20. The only hurdle is cost: payment is required upfront. For Debbie, this is a last resort, but it’s also her best chance to finally get a diagnosis and a plan for treatment.
One of the biggest challenges is that Mayo Clinic care isn’t covered here in Canada, and we’ve exhausted all possible funding options. The costs in the U.S. are very high. Between consultations, advanced testing, and rare-disease specialists (which the Mayo Clinic is renowned for), the estimate comes to about $40,000. It’s an overwhelming figure, and far more than Debbie can manage on her own. Asking for help is something that is not easy for Debbie, and she has tried to avoid it, but at this point, it’s the only way forward. With humility and gratitude, we’re inviting family, friends, and everyone who cares for her to consider supporting her in her journey to hopefully get a diagnosis and treatment plan.
Every bit of support makes a difference. Your donation - no matter the size - will go straight toward Debbie’s medical care. And if giving financially isn’t possible right now, please don’t feel pressured. Your prayers, kind words, and simply sharing this campaign mean everything to her. Each gesture helps bring Debbie one step closer to the diagnosis and treatment she’s been searching for these past 5+ years. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!
