COME ON, ORCAS — OUR NEIGHBORS NEED US!
As many of you now know, yesterday (2/23/26) Davina and Lu experienced a devastating house fire and lost their home. By the grace of God, Lu and Takani (their sweet dog) made it out safely. Their beloved cat, Bear, is still missing, and our hearts are holding hope for a miracle. Davina is currently out of the country and is unable to return home until Saturday, making this heartbreak even harder to carry from afar.
In the midst of this loss, we are so grateful for the incredible kindness of Adam & Shane at Beach Haven, who have opened their home to give Lu and Takani a safe place to land for the next few days. This is what community looks like. Davina is a boat captain here on Orcas Island and a faithful volunteer with the Severe Weather Shelter at Orcas Island Community Church. Lu is a retired firefighter who has spent a lifetime serving and protecting others. Together, they care for three horses and several chickens, all of whom are safe — but their lives have been completely upended.
Now it’s our turn. I am helping to raise funds to support Davina and Lu as they begin the long road of rebuilding their lives — replacing what was lost, finding stability, and knowing they are not alone in this moment. Orcas Island is known for showing up — fiercely, generously, and with love. COME ON, ORCAS. Let’s wrap our arms around Davina and Lu. Let’s give hope where there is loss. Let’s remind them that this island stands with them.
