My name is Jason Fisher, and I'm the parent of a boys varsity soccer player for the Davidson Warriors. Located in Mobile, AL, Davidson is a public high school offering an International Baccalaureate Diploma - 1 of only 2 high schools in the Mobile County Public School District (the largest in Alabama) to have this program.
Davidson Soccer is a 7A program (highest classification in Alabama) that is a perennial state playoff participant and championship contender. While many high schools in Alabama have student-athletes who are first-generation citizens of the United States, few high schools show the diversity of the Davidson roster while remaining competitive. The International Baccalaureate Diploma is a major reason why Davidson High School has such a diverse student population.
The Need: $525 will send at least 2 incoming freshman soccer athletes to a critical summer camp in Hattiesburg, MS, to develop skills and chemistry with their teammates. With limited funding provided by the school/district for the soccer program, each student-athlete is responsible for providing a portion of the costs. A few of the soccer players are fortunate to come from a family with resources to cover those costs. However, many players on the roster are part of families living at or below the poverty line, meaning these players must often sell snacks, candy, and other fundraising items to get the money to attend camp. With a full academic day, these fundraising activities essentially become a job that allows them to participate and show their skills in hopes of gaining a roster spot.
Why This Need? Several students worked hard to sell their goods and pay their way, but through no fault of their own, they came up short of their goal. The soccer program does not have funds from the district to provide Kevin DeLange - the highly respected soccer coach at Davidson - with enough money to cover the outstanding costs. A committed coach with an incredible soccer resume and understanding of the game, Coach DeLange's most important contribution may not be the X's and O's, but the way he gets the most out of every team entrusted to him. He accomplishes this by coaching to player's strengths and emphasizing the value of working together - not only on the soccer field, but in life. His athletes love to play for him, and it shows in their results.
Leah and I are proud of Lucas. He is a varsity starter and will be a senior this upcoming season. He is also the starting kicker for the Davidson varsity football team and plays on the Davidson golf team. But he's a soccer player first and foremost, and his best attribute is leadership on the field. Lucas is very talented and a super hard-worker, having won the Midfielder of the Year award as a junior and an invitation to play in the Alabama All-Star soccer game this July. When Luke told us about his teammates need for a boost, we were committed to making it happen. This was vital to helping his future teammates become the best version of themselves they could be, both on and off the field. And that is something we can all get behind.
Deadline: We need to raise that $525 by Tuesday, May 27 for the team to reserve the spots they need at the camp.
Please chip in whatever you can to help us achieve our objective. Every contribution makes a difference, no matter the size. We will achieve or surpass this goal together! We are asking for your endorsement of this cause by making a donation; contributions that will be used to invest in our young people and help them realize their value to their teammates, family, and most important, to themselves.
Thank you!
