Support David's Fight Against Rare Cancer

Hi Everyone,

First, thank you so much for taking the time to visit this page. Asking for help like this is something I never imagined having to do, and it’s honestly one of the hardest things I’ve ever written. But I want to be as honest and clear as I can about what’s going on with my dad—and how you might be able to help.

In 2022, my dad, David Lundy, went to the eye doctor for what we assumed was a routine exam. The doctor suspected a detached retina and recommended immediate surgery. If you know my dad, you won’t be surprised that he refused. He knew that I had worked for a retina specialist in the past, and called for my opinion. We quickly followed up with a retina specialist.

That second opinion revealed something none of us could have prepared for: a tumor inside his eye.

He quickly underwent radiation to treat it, and while that procedure was successful, further testing revealed he had a rare and aggressive cancer called Uveal Melanoma.

This cancer spreads through the bloodstream and hides in the body, sometimes for years. We were told that it would likely return, and when it did, it would be terminal. We just didn’t know when.

In the summer of 2023, we found out it had returned—and spread to his liver. That’s the organ this cancer tends to attack most aggressively, and prognosis at that point is always devastating.

Despite the odds, my dad has fought so hard. He entered a promising clinical trial, but the results were short-lived. He was denied for another. We’ve traveled to Tennessee and explored every option available here in Georgia—every treatment, every possibility. Sadly, because this cancer is so rare, all options remain experimental.

He’s been out of work for over a year, and while we eventually got him approved for disability (after a long fight), he’s still been denied access to many of the basic services he needs. He has been without medical insurance since the beginning and, as you can imagine, treatment has been almost insurmountably expensive. If it weren’t for the Northside financial assistance program, he would not have been able to pursue treatment at all.

It’s been both exhausting and heartbreaking to watch.

Now, our focus has shifted to making his remaining time as peaceful and comfortable as possible.

What makes this even more painful is that my dad is not just leaving behind me—he’s leaving behind my little sister, Holly. She’s only 19 years old. She doesn’t yet have a job, or a car, or even a clear picture of how to face this next chapter.
And she’s already endured more than any child should.

In 2008, Holly’s mom—my dad’s wife—was tragically murdered. Holly was just a toddler. And now, as she stands at the edge of adulthood, she’s facing the unimaginable reality of losing her father too. She will soon be without both parents.

My heart breaks every time I think about what she’s going through, and I want more than anything to give her some stability, even if just for a short time. But I know I can’t do it alone.
