Help Me Fight Cancer, Rebuild My Life, and Care for My Baby
My name is David Walter Renken, and I’m a U.S. Army veteran, a father, and someone who’s been trying to stay strong through more challenges than I ever imagined facing.
After serving my country, I was diagnosed with service-related thyroid cancer, and I’ve been fighting it for more than seven years. The cancer is still active, and the treatments and medications leave me sick every morning and in pain every day. Even on the hardest days, I try to stay grateful and keep going — mostly because I have children I love dearly and one new beautiful 8-month-old daughter who gives me the strength to keep fighting.
Over the years, I’ve also been fighting another uphill battle — trying to get the VA to recognize my cancer as service-connected for disability benefits. I’ve been denied multiple times, even though my doctors have confirmed it’s linked to my military service. Each denial has been heartbreaking and has made it harder to afford basic living expenses, and legal help. I’m still in the appeals process and won’t stop until I finally get the benefits I’ve earned through my exceptional military service.
On top of the cancer and the financial strain, I’ve also been going through a very painful and abusive divorce. My ex physically attacked me, and I’m still trying to recover emotionally and financially while going through court to protect myself and build a stable life for my new daughter.
Right now, I’m asking for help to cover:
Rent and moving costs for a safe home, possibly a camper
Legal and court fees
Basic living expenses while I continue treatments
Childcare and essentials for my baby girl
I’ve always been someone who likes to help others — I take pride in being dependable, hardworking, and kind. Asking for help for myself is not easy. But at this point, I need some support to get back on my feet, heal, and keep being the best dad I can be.
