A Man Who Spent His Life Helping Others Now Needs Our Help

David's Story: From Helper to Patient

For 25 years, David Brill has been fighting kidney disease with remarkable grace and determination. Throughout his battle, he never stopped serving others—volunteering at his church for two decades and helping direct over 10,000 meals to a local soup kitchen and also helping countless families navigate healthcare/retirement planning challenges in his career as a licensed insurance professional.

David is the kind of person who gives sleeping bags and warm clothes to homeless individuals in the cold of winter and has travelled to Europe with YWAM (Youth With A Mission) to inspire hope through Creative Arts Ministry and spoken word. He's spent half his life involved with the ministry of reconciliation (2 Corinthians 5:18,19) from calming racial tensions after violent protests in a neighboring City, to praying for broken and fractured families and counselling individuals involved with witchcraft and victims of abuse tormented by addiction and confusion by guiding them to the path of healing and restoration.

Today, we have the chance to lift David up.

When Hope Turned to Nightmare

In 2013, after years of difficult dialysis treatments, David received the call he'd been waiting for—a kidney match. He rushed to the Tampa Transplant Hospital, filled with hope for a new chapter in his life.

What should have been a life-saving procedure became a medical nightmare.

Despite clearly communicating his history of bleeding and explicitly warning the surgical team about his high risk of haemorrhage, David's concerns were dismissed. The surgical team proceeded by administering blood thinners during the operation—a decision that would change everything.

The Devastating Aftermath

The predictable happened. David began bleeding and developing a massive hematoma over his transplanted kidneys. What followed was a cascade of complications:

Seven total surgeries' blood clots

Life-threatening infections C. diff colitis and Pneumonia
Respiratory failure requiring ventilator support
60-pound weight loss dropping from 191 to 133 pounds
Permanent nerve damage in his core, abdomen, and pelvis
Debilitating chronic pain weakness and atrophy after rehabilitation and Imaging were denied.

The most heart breaking part? David spent his first night off the ventilator in critical care completely alone in ICU isolation with a broken call button and unable to summon help when he needed it most. His screams for help went unanswered into the early morning hours. The very people entrusted with his care had abandoned him in his darkest hour in unspeakable conditions causing additional physical and psychological harm.
The Human Cost

The medical complications destroyed more than David's health—they destroyed his livelihood. Once a thriving financial services professional licensed in over 25 states, David lost all his professional licenses due to his inability to work. His financial losses exceed $1 million.

While still recovering and in severe pain and rehabilitation denied, David was forced from his rented home during the mortgagor's foreclosure proceedings. When he asked his medical team for a professional doctor's letter to help postpone the eviction, they refused—adding further trauma to an already devastating situation.

A Pattern of Neglect

The Tampa hospital where David received his transplant recently earned a "C" safety rating from the Leapfrog Group for below-average performance in patient safety—specifically citing high rates of infections, surgical complications, and blood clot issues. These are exactly the preventable complications David has suffered from.

The surgeon who performed David's transplant has never followed up with him. Not once. No phone call, no email, no attempt to take responsibility for what the hospital dismissively called "an unfortunate outcome."

David Today: Surviving, Not Thriving

David now lives on a small disability income, struggling to cover basic necessities like food, housing, and medical care. Despite his pain and limitations, he continues researching ways to optimize his health and shares this knowledge with others facing similar challenges.

He remains the same generous spirit who spent decades helping others—but now he's the one who needs help.
