Help Support Dave's Journey to Heart Health
Organizer: Alicia Stevenson
Beneficiary: Dave Hagar & Family
Location: Des Moines, Iowa
Thank you in advance for taking time to read this and for helping support Dave and his family. Dave has a long road ahead, and the hope is to lift some of the financial burdens so that he can focus on healing and spending time with his loved ones.
A Sudden Health Crisis
One morning in late July, Dave began experiencing persistent chest pain that lasted for several hours. Concerned, he went to Urgent Care, where an EKG revealed troubling signs. He was immediately transferred to the Emergency Room by ambulance and eventually admitted to the hospital. What was supposed to be a precautionary visit quickly turned into something much more serious. Doctors discovered multiple concerning issues with Dave’s heart, including:
- Several blockages
- Severely weakened heart muscle function
- A left bundle branch blockage
- A leaking heart valve
Dave was discharged with seven new medications and a referral to a heart specialist in Kansas City for more advanced care.
A Heartbreaking Turn of Events
When Dave and Katy met with the heart surgeon in Kansas City, they were expecting to schedule bypass surgery. Instead, they were told that surgery was not an option. Dave would likely need a heart transplant in the future and referred him to a heart failure specialist.
Fortunately, that specialist was able to see Dave the same day and began developing a treatment plan. While a transplant is still on the horizon, there are other options to explore first. His first procedure is scheduled for Friday, September 5th.
An Already Busy Life
All of this has unfolded during a particularly busy and stressful time for the family:
- Dave and Katy just moved their son Sam into his college dorm for his freshman year at Iowa State University
- Katy started a new semester in her Master of Arts in Teaching program
- Katy also began her 4th year as a Student Support Interventionist at Perkins Elementary all while managing life at home with their other children, Max and Evie, who just began their new school year.
How You Can Help
Now the financial strain is setting in. Medical bills are coming in from the hospital stay, tuition is due, and many more trips to Kansas City will be required for treatment, each adding more medical, travel, and lodging expenses. On top of that, Dave will be losing income while he undergoes procedures and recovers.
This is where you can make a real difference.
Many people have asked how they can help — Your donation, no matter the size, will go directly toward:
- Medical bills and prescription costs
- Travel and lodging for trips to Kansas City
- Tuition support
- Loss of income during Dave’s recovery
- Day-to-day expenses for their family
Let’s rally around Dave, Katy, and their kids. Let’s help ease some of the financial stress so they can focus on what matters most — healing and being together.
Thank you for your support, generosity, and positive messages.
