Dave Cooney - and the fight against ALS (Lou Gehrigs Disease).
Home remodel support for the medical journey.
To my family and friends, as many of you know I'm officially in the battle against perhaps the worst terminal disease known, Amyotrophic lateral Sclerosis (maybe you remember the ice bucket challenge?).
Last year in January 2024 I began to notice some issues when I was walking, which got much more pronounced by July. On October 24th 2024 I received the official diagnosis, and my worst fears were realized. I was now facing the same horrible fate that my father, aunt, uncle, and my oldest brother all suffered. I am also the same age as my brother, so our oldest child is in college, and our youngest is just starting college this fall. So to say the Cooney's have PLENTY of reasons to stay in this fight is an understatement. This includes all of YOU are included in my strength!
Getting this diagnosis has been very hard - but there is one piece of good news, my genetic ALS does give me the chance to take the drug Qalsody (toferson). The one and only proven to significantly extend life and physical abilities, and only a very small percentage of ALS even qualify for it to be effective. I am now restarting the medication in August 2025, as many of you know I had to cease for a few months due to some extreme side effects, keep your fingers crossed! although I'm no longer walking, I'm still doing well with my breathing, and I can still speak, and I can still use my phone.
We are asking for your support to accomplish home modifications that provide home caregiver status. The work we need to make the house more compliant includes; ceiling mounted Hoyer track and hoist from bed to bathroom to shower, widening doors, replacing carpet with resilient flooring, completing ramps into the house, shower modifications, smart home upgrades, and handicap van provision. I will need to keep going to doctor appointments and lumbar injections in my spine every 28 days.
The Cooney family greatly appreciates your love, prayers, and support. although I'm now in the fight for my life, I'm not alone. We will continue to pray for a cure, always seeking to participate in clinical trials, and spend quality time with our children, family, and friends. So many of you have been calling and reaching out. Please don't let anything prevent you from making that connection, either to me or to Ashley. A text or phone call will power me through the good days and rough days ahead!
Please help us get the word out on our campaign.
We will keep you updated on the journey!
All Love and hugs - Dave, Ashley, Belle, and Brad.
