My name is Darnima and I’m a mother of 6. In September of 2014, I was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia. I was placed on oral medication which was supposed to make the cancer undetectable in my blood. Due to having a child that was also gravely ill, I wasn’t always compliant with my treatment as her health was my priority.
After all this time of dealing with the disease, because it was not very well controlled, the disease began to mutate and became resistant to certain medications. There are only 5 medications to treat leukemia and I had been on 3 of them, and they did not seem to control the disease very well. After being referred to another physician who specializes in leukemia, he recommended that I receive a bone marrow transplant. In his opinion, that was the best course of treatment as he felt that even if he got it to where the cancer was undetectable, the chance that it would come back in 10-15 years was highly likely and stated it would pretty much be a terminal illness at that point.
I was then referred to another physician to start the transplant process. I was admitted into the hospital in Nashville, TN on October 23rd to start the process. I have been away from home since then as I had to stay near the hospital until 100 days post-transplant. I thought I was prepared financially to make it through this, but I was wrong. I am asking you to offer up massive prayers and financial support for me and my family. Whatever is in your heart to give in this challenge would be appreciated. Every little bit counts. I understand that these are hard times for most people, so if you can't donate, please, please share! Any funds donated would be used to cover the financial burden of medical bills, travel expenses for my family, and daily living expenses.
