Dear Friends
For the last 25 years I have been translating and writing a commentary on the 易經 Yijing, also known as the I Ching. I don't know why it became my journey to do this, but I feel honored to be supported by the dralas and good fortune. Five years ago I published two volumes, both of which have been completely revised.
As I have translated it, the Yijing provides a brilliant vision of how to create a good human society founded on Basic Goodness, the Dralas, natural hierarchy and the natural wisdom of Heaven, Earth, and the four seasons.
I have now completed all three volumes, (including re-translating and new commentaries for Vol II and Vol. III). They are ready to publish!
My approach to the Yijing is unique in three ways:
1. I have unpacked the meaning and structure of the sequence of hexagrams, revealing a highly articulated process-map of human society.
2. Rather than emphasizing the divinatory aspect of the hexagrams, I have read the sequence as an detailed explication of how good human society—Enlightened Society—can be developed out of chaos and ignorance,
3. I have used Shambhala Buddhism as a "receiving tradition" whose language and view illuminates the ancient Chinese text.
Volume I "Commentary and Structural Analysis" is 480 pages, with around 175 diagrams. It is my introduction and analysis of the Yijing written for the serious student, but accessible to ordinary readers.
Volume II: "The Great Treatise" is a translation and commentary on a Confucian school commentary on the Yijing written in about 300 BC
Volume III: The Sixty-four Hexagrams is my translation and commentary on the hexagrams themselves.
I hope to live long enough to translate the 384 changing lines, which will make up Vol IV.
I have largely self-funded this work, with help from some significat help from kind friends along the way. The books are all now typeset, ready to publish both on paper and electronically. That was expensive!
I hope to offer this work to The Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche this summer in Vermont. Your support is meaningful and deeply appreciated.
