Our dear friends, Dan and Susan Hettinger, are facing a difficult journey. As a Care Pastor, Dan has spent his life walking alongside others in times of need. Recently, he learned that his rare bone cancer (Chondrosarcoma) has returned after four years. The tumors were discovered during a routine scan and confirmed by two MRIs—one tumor is in his pelvic bone, and both are slowly growing.
This type of cancer does not respond to chemotherapy or radiation. Surgery is the only option, and it’s a major one—more involved than the last (surgeons will be required to remove bone plus margins). Dan is scheduled for surgery on August 5 at the Cleveland Clinic. Recovery is expected to take 3 to 6 months, with at least the first three requiring him to avoid putting any weight on his right leg.
Dan and Susan are doing all they can to prepare, but the financial burden is significant. They face costs for travel, hotel accommodations during Dan’s hospital stay, rental of a hospital bed at home, meals, and possibly extended rehab care. They’re seeking help through the American Cancer Society, but support is not guaranteed.
Dan has cared for so many. Now, we have a chance to care for him. Any donation—large or small—will go toward easing their burden. In addition to the direct medical expenses, it is my hope this tangible expression of care will be an encouragement. Perhaps they will even be able to fly their grandkids in for a visit. Thank you for standing with them in this season.
