Danny’s Journey
Danny has faced an incredibly challenging journey since he was just a young child. At the tender age of 4, he fell ill and was put on total parenteral nutrition (TPN) At 5 he was diagnosed with a chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction and at 6 marked the beginning of a series of trials that would test his strength and resilience. Losing most of his small bowel due to prolapse in May 2012 was a significant blow, leading to his first transplant, isolated small bowel, in August 2012.
Despite the hope that came with the transplant, Danny encountered numerous complications, including PTLD (cancer) and rejection, which kept him hospitalized for the majority of 2013. The decision to remove the transplanted bowel in December 2013 was another difficult chapter in his journey. Subsequently, he was relisted for a multi-organ transplant, encompassing the liver, small bowel, pancreas, and colon, in June 2015.
Danny's health continued to deteriorate, with frequent hospitalizations every six weeks between 2018 and 2020. After a challenging wait of 5.5 years, he finally received the call for a transplant in October 2020, which initially brought hope and promise. However, his recovery was not without setbacks. Complications arose, including recurring pneumatosis and the development of hemolytic anemia and graft-versus-host disease (GVHD).
Throughout these trials, Danny found solace in the presence of his brothers, who joined him in Omaha in May 2022. Unfortunately, his health continued to decline, leading to prolonged hospitalizations, ventilator support, and battles with pneumonia and coronavirus. Despite returning home with oxygen support, Danny's condition worsened, reaching a climax with his recent diagnosis of bronchiolitis obliterans, a condition with no treatment and a grim prognosis.
In the face of such adversity, Danny's family has remained steadfast by his side. The sudden and unexpected loss of their father in January 2024 only added to their burden. Now, with Danny's oxygen needs increasing and his lung function deteriorating rapidly, his medical team has made the difficult decision to transition him to hospice care in the coming weeks.
Throughout his journey, Danny's brothers—Christopher, Connor, and Dillon—have been his pillars of strength, providing unwavering support and love. As they navigate this heartbreaking chapter together, their bond remains unbreakable, offering comfort in the face of immense hardship.
