Support Daniela Ortega's Leukemia Battle

Hello! My name is Daniela Ortega, I'm 29 years old.

2 years ago, me and my husband lost our first baby, we were devastated but had faith that one day we would get our little miracle.

Fast forward to August 2024, we worked extra hours, worked outside jobs, sold stuff from home to make our little girl dream come true, we headed to Disney World to celebrate her 7th birthday, where I was planning something extra special, and I announced my pregnancy to my husband and baby girl! We were overly excited with this news, when we came back from our trip, we went for our first ultrasound and lab work, a week later, I got a call from my OBGYN to go ASAP to the clinic, I was referred out as an emergency to an oncologist because my lab work looked very concerning!

At the oncologist I was diagnosed with Leukemia, due to the pregnancy and the extremely high amout of wbc in my body they sent me to MD Anderson hoping to find the type and the the right treatment without affecting my baby! We got results and I was diagnosed with Chronic Myeloid Leukemia, a very treatable cancer and it can be treated with oral medication, the Drs worked super hard to find the right treatment for me and started me on medication, its been working extremely well so far.

I had to stay at the hospital for almost a month to make sure my wbc were at a "safe" level, leaving my husband and me with no income.

Sadly my insurance was out of network with MD Anderson and nothing was covered, we are very nervous and scared about the upcoming bills, yet we are greatful that we were able to be seen there and able to get my medication to control the cancer.

We never thought we could be in this situation, we are scared of the diagnosis but trying our best to stay positive and greatful that its being controlled and my pregnancy is going well and my baby is healthy!
