Hello! My name is Angie Salazar and I want to share my little sister’s story. She’s one of the strongest person I know and she’s dealing with a lot right now. I want to help her in every way possible. Here’s a little bit of her story.
Her name is Daniela Colon. She’s 32 years old, happily married, with an 8-year-old little boy named Jadiel who loves all things baseball.
In April of 2022, she was diagnosed with Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC), in other words, Cirrhosis. This too is an autoimmune disease that, of course, affects your liver to a degree in which the only solution or cure is to have a transplant. She was referred to Mayo Clinic of Jacksonville, which is one of the most prestigious transplant hospitals known worldwide, to have more in-depth and extensive testing. After about a year of testing and treatment, she was deemed a candidate for evaluation, which entailed even more testing, evaluations by numerous specialists including but not limited to Pulmonologists, Psychiatrists, Oncologists, Endocrinologists, Hepatologists, Transplant Surgeons, ICU Doctors, and the list goes on. During these last two years, she has seen her life slowly slip away, it seems like. Within the first month of being diagnosed, she lost over 30 pounds, her hair started falling out by the handful. She noticed she was losing muscle mass and fat, her energy levels were little to none, and all of these drastic changes she was learning to cope with. During this time, she was still working full-time because it would help her distract her mind from the fact that she was diagnosed with a life-changing disease. She was never going to get her “normal” life back. And despite all of the negativity going on around her , physically and even mentally, her faith grew stronger. Her prayers would not cease, her cry out to God became louder. She would declare the opposite of what the naked eye would see. She would declare that by His wounds she was healed. That He carried all of her burdens on the cross. That it was He who called her by name even before she was in her mother’s womb. That He had bigger plans for her than she did for herself. In March of 2024, these groups of physicians met, and they came to an agreement that she was in fact eligible for transplant and was activated on the UNOS list (United Network for Organ Sharing). At that point, she felt like she was given her life back. She had hope, she had faith, and had all of these ideas of getting her life back to “normal.” Being able to play with her son more, attend more of his practices and games, and just to be able to soak it all in. But it was on the morning of May 2, 2024, that she received the most devastating news. She received a message that said that her case was discussed in the liver selection meeting and the decision from the committee was to remove her from the transplant list due to multiple comorbidities decreasing the patients survival after surgery. This decision caught our family by surprise. Her heart dropped to her stomach, tears began to fill her eyes and she felt as if her world had come crashing down on her. She had a few tears fall from her cheeks but could not properly process what she was just told. Definitely a hard pill to swallow, and because of the deterioration of her liver and condition, she was obligated to stop working. She is constantly being seen by a Hepatologist (Liver Doctor) to determine the progression. Having blood draws nearly every week because she is anemic and require blood transfusions quite often. And just trying to make the best of the current situation. Any amount would greatly be appreciated and used towards bills, food, medical expenses, and treatments.
