For Daniel and Rebecca Klein, the move to the North Carolina coast was supposed to be a new beginning.

After living through Hurricane Helene in Swannanoa, one of the communities hit hardest by the storm, they had just relocated to the North Carolina coast with their 15-year-old son, Owen. They were looking forward to slowing down, spending time together as a family, and putting an incredibly difficult season behind them.

But just two weeks after arriving, everything changed.

Daniel received a devastating and completely unexpected diagnosis: a malignant, aggressive, Stage 4 Glioblastoma brain tumor. He underwent emergency brain surgery at Duke Hospital the very next day, only to suffer a brain bleed five days later that required him to be airlifted back to the ICU.

After two weeks of serious post-surgical complications, Daniel has now been discharged from the hospital and is recovering in Asheville, close to friends and family. As he continues to heal from surgery and prepares for chemotherapy and radiation, he will require close monitoring, significant care, and intensive support at home.

In a matter of days, the life Rebecca and Daniel have worked so hard to build, has been turned upside down.

Daniel is a devoted husband, an incredibly attentive father, a gifted musician, and the founder of Port City Amps, where he handcrafts guitar amps and custom music gear. He is honest, humble, hardworking, funny and always willing to lend a helping hand. For years, he quietly put that spirit into action by volunteering his time to serve meals to community members in need.

Rebecca is just as deeply committed to her community. Volunteering has always been a core part of who she is; even in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Helene, while her own family was facing total uncertainty, she immediately jumped in to help staff a local medical tent, helping neighbors with medical needs.

And while Rebecca was showing up for others, her own family was carrying another heavy burden. Last year, she was diagnosed with a rare liposarcoma. Surgeons were able to remove the tumor, but because this type of cancer can recur, she continues to need regular monitoring.

This family has already carried more than most could imagine, yet no matter what they are facing, they have always found ways to show up for the community around them.

Now it is our turn to show up for them.
