On December 8th, 2024, my father, Daniel Bastie, suffered a massive heart attack. He was rushed to the University of Chicago where he underwent an 8-hour open-heart surgery. He then spent 38 days in the ICU, fighting for his life every single day. Doctors told us they weren’t sure he would make it—but against all odds, Dan persevered. Through it all, he kept his humor and spirit alive, often cracking jokes and reminding visitors to “be careful out there.” Even in his darkest moments, he was still worried about the people he loved.
After his ICU stay, he continued his recovery at Shirley Ryan for physical and occupational therapy, and on February 5th, 2025, we were finally able to bring him home.
This past year has been incredibly challenging. Dan has been unable to return to work, continues to attend rehab, and is now on dialysis. He also suffered an infection that sent him back to the hospital for most of July. Most recently, he was in a car accident that totaled one of my parents’ cars.
Through all of this, my parents have remained strong and resilient, but the financial strain has become overwhelming. They would never ask for help themselves, but I know any support—big or small—would make a world of difference as they navigate these hardships.
Thank you for reading and for considering helping my family during this difficult time.
