Dane has been in the hospital for three weeks, fighting advanced liver disease. He’s facing the possibility of a liver transplant and, while he’s been sober for almost 90 days, he needs to reach six months of sobriety before he can be added to the transplant list. During this time, Dane can’t work and is struggling to cover his rent for sober living, medical expenses, and basic needs like food and gas to get to meetings. He’s always been careful with money and is doing everything he can to stay on track, but the financial stress is threatening his recovery.

I’ve known Dane for three years. I met him at the 1st Step House of North County. In the past, Dane never fully committed to the AA program, but that’s changed. He’s now working the steps, building a strong support group, and attending church with me. He’s desperate to live, to practice the AA program, and to give himself a real chance at recovery. His biggest challenge is regaining enough health to survive and eventually return to work, all while managing the stress of mounting bills.

Dane has always been reluctant to ask for help, but his current situation has brought him to a place of humility. He’s committed to paying this generosity forward through a life of service in AA, believing his story can become a testimony of restoration and hope. I’ve never done anything like this before, but after much prayer and seeing the real change in Dane, I believe others will want to help him.
