Support Cynthia's Recovery from Major Surgery Debt
Donation protected
My name is Larry Curley, a lifelong Diné advocate for Native American communities. My wife, Cynthia, recently underwent a major surgery that has left us with a significant medical debt of $54,117.94. Prior to surgery, Cindy was diagnosed with STAGE 3 Bladder Prolapse and Large Cervical Polyps which required her to get both a hysterectomy and a bladder repair.
My wife and I have worked in the Tribal health field for many years. In 2018, I took the position of Executive Director of the National Indian Council on Aging, a floundering organization at the time. However, in 2023, after a successful national conference, I was abruptly told that "we are letting you go.” No reason was given.
I requested from the board a 3-month severance pay and continued health insurance until the end of December to make sure her surgery would be covered by the organization’s carrier. My wife is non-Native and therefore not covered by the Indian Health Service. The Board denied both requests.
Despite having health insurance, we've encountered insurance carrier changes and unexpected coverage limitations that have resulted in this overwhelming bill. Our insurance company only paid 10% of the hospital bill.
So, we are reaching out to family, friends, and the general public to ask for their generous support to help us cover these costs so that we can continue to focus on Cynthia's recovery. Your donation will make a real difference in our lives. Thank you for your compassion and support.
My brother Terry is organizing this account on my behalf.
