For nearly 15 years, Crooked Crust was a late-night staple on Fry Street in Denton, serving the UNT community and locals alike. Our team—made up of college students and young adults—worked hard to keep the doors open, even as we faced challenges behind the scenes. Unfortunately, the owner was often absent and negligent, leaving us with little support or communication about the future of the restaurant.
Last week, we started noticing repairmen coming in to work on the A/C, take measurements, and check water lines. They mentioned these repairs were for a new owner and a new business moving in soon. We overheard someone talking about moving the oven out on March 2nd, which tipped us off that Crooked Crust would be closing. I tried to get answers from my supervisor, but she was just as in the dark as we were. After waiting for an announcement that never came, I called an emergency staff meeting to let everyone know what was happening. We were all shocked, angry, and scared—especially since rent was due and we’d only have one more partial paycheck.
The next day, a crew member posted about our situation on the r/denton subreddit, and the outpouring of support from the community was incredible. This finally prompted some communication from management, but it was too late—the owner decided to close the store early, cutting our last few days of work and leaving us scrambling. Now, our entire staff is suddenly unemployed, with bills to pay and no time to prepare. Most of us were already living paycheck to paycheck, and this abrupt closure has put us in a really tough spot.
