I’m making a film!
Director’s statement:
Why it’s important for me to make You Don’t Like it?
Hello! I am Courtney Honors, I am a Playwright and Filmmaker from Kansas City and recent graduate of the Playwriting/Screenwriting program at SUNY Purchase. For my next filmmaking endeavor I wanted to set out to write something grounded in my own life experience that I could bring emotional truth to – I wrote You Don’t Like it? To convey my experience with ARFID (Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder) or to untrained eyes what looks like “picky eating”. My goal for the script was to describe the internal challenges of eating daily, attempting exposures to new foods, but also the major social barrier and judgement that comes from not eating the way that is expected of you. By showing interactions between the main character Perri, who has ARFID, and Corrine who doesn’t know what ARFID is, we can see the small ways these two parties can misunderstand each other, whether it’s someone who’s struggling retreating inward, or a concerned friend saying the wrong thing. My mission is to validate those who feel misunderstood about their disordered eating as well as educate others who might not know how to approach the issue. Sharing this story just as the script has helped me feel like I can be more open to people in my life about what having ARFID is like. With your help we can spread the message further!
Goal:
We plan to raise $1,300 to fund the entirety of our filming needs. Funds will be responsible for minor set decoration, Costumes, and prop food – but mostly it will be used to feed our cast and crew on our filming days. With our team well taken care of and energized, we are confident we can achieve our vision!
Additional funds will help us cover festival submission fees.
Timeline:
We plan to shoot our film over the course of two weekends in October 2025 in Kansas City. We want post production to be completed by Summer 2026.
More specifics about our film~~~
Logline: A young woman struggling with extreme picky eating is put at odds when her intrusive house guest insists on throwing an elaborate dinner party.
Genre: Drama
Runtime: 12 minutes
STORY:
Perri, a punk musician and extreme picky eater, has just returned from a small tour. Unknown to her roommate, Sam, Perri is struggling to eat what she usually does, but despite this setback she is determined to complete a new food exposure of eating a strawberry, which she’s never achieved before. When Sam’s friend from college, Corrine, comes to visit, she becomes intrigued by Perri’s odd state. Corrine, unsure how to bond with Perri, tries to use food as a way to connect, which unintentionally pushes Perri away. A resentment between them starts to grow and spikes when Corrine throws a dinner party that Perri is not enthusiastic about. Perri questions if she’s able to solve her problem independently. What will make it possible for her to eat the damn strawberry!?
