Facing something that pet parents hope that they never have to. A few people know now, but we were trying to get the full plan in front of us before we updated everyone. And so we knew what the next year or two may hold for us.
In October, we noticed a mass on Corvo that we thought may be a more benign issue. His normal vet didn’t have any openings and we knew it should be looked at in a timely manner so I brought him into urgent care. After an exam and testing it was determined that he has metastatic apocrine gland anal sac adenocarcinoma. (Literally ass cancer) This is a decently aggressive cancer that is located to the right of his tail (nub since he is a corgi). I got the soonest appointment later that month with the oncologist to discuss treatment, prognosis, and just the best way to handle the whole situation for our little dude. With chemo we should have at least another year or two with him. If he was older and not still a ball of energy then I may have considered a different option for him but if anyone knows Corvo, he is 10 going on 2. He is currently tolerating his treatments amazingly well, and doesn’t even know anything is wrong with him which is the best we could have hoped for. (And is very much enjoying all of his extra treats) He still has so much personality and drive left in his short little body.
All that to be said, his ongoing treatment and follow ups with lab work are going to add up over time. Having one medically complex pet is one thing but two makes things very tight. (Our cat also happens to be on chemo along with 6 other medications for a liver issue but that is now stable and he is doing great.) From the basic calculations that I have done with the vet cost and the chemo itself (which is the biggest expense) his treatment will be about $7000 a year for the cancer alone. This doesn’t include normal vet care, vaccines, basic meds, or what we have already paid to get to this point. We are reaching out to get some assistance with this if anyone is able, for both him and the other pets.
Corvo loves everyone he meets. He is way more of a people dog and will very quickly let you know that. And god forbid you talk to the other pets and give them his attention, lol. He is my chaotic little spitfire and we love him dearly. I have had him since he was 8 weeks old and would love just a bit more time with him. I will always do what is best by him and all my animals.
I am not typically one to ask for help and I know that the goal is set high but we dont expect to achieve the whole thing. I just wanted to put a realistic cost for what we are looking at for Corvo's care and have some flexibility in case other issues arrise. All of the funding will go to him and if he doesnt make it to use it all, it would go to the care of the other pets.
What ever is donated would go a long way to make sure that Corvo has the best care for the time he has left here and take a little of the stress away so that we can enjoy however long that is with him.
