Support Corey's Family Throughout Transplant Journey

We are grateful for help and support as Corey waits for a life-saving liver and kidney transplant.

He has fought a long battle that started 15 years ago. In March 2024 we learned Corey is in end stage liver failure due to metabolic cirrhosis, and the liver failure contributed to tacrolimus toxicity which has greatly damaged his first transplanted kidney that he received from his dad, Joe Turner, in 2017. Corey has been listed for transplant since August 3. On August 11, complications brought him to the ER and ICU for 6 days, then to a regular room where we now wait. He is currently stable enough to be ready for surgery, but he’s quite uncomfortable, swollen, exhausted and is in a severely declined state of health. He is living day-to-day with different challenges arising and interventions being taken, such as dialysis and blood transfusions. Living for so long with multiple organ failures takes a hard toll on all your body systems. Furthermore, Corey is distraught over the reality that someone’s life must be lost in order for his to be saved, but he needs this transplant to happen asap. Corey's family--his wife Amy and 12-year-old son Holden, his parents, his brother and sister and their families--all need more time with Corey.

Our family faces much uncertainty in the coming months. Corey’s current health situation is dire and uncertain. After the 8-hour transplant surgery, he will recover in the hospital for another 3 to 5 weeks. Full recovery from a liver transplant is 6 to 12 months. After initial discharge, we will be back for daily outpatient hospital visits, then gradually down to 1 to 3 per week, then bi-monthly or so. Additional hospitalizations and inpatient rehabilitation treatments are common during this period.

Corey is taking leave from work, with reduced income, but FMLA job protection only covers 6 more weeks, and after that his job could be in jeopardy. We have no reason to believe it is, but that's an additional stress of future financial uncertainty. At some point SSDI should kick in, but that's a 6-12 month process and is also a significant reduction in income. In addition, the gas and food expenses throughout this lengthy hospital stay are adding up. This household of 3 will be in a tight financial spot for a bit!

Helping us with a financial donation will ease our burden of stress throughout this ordeal. We appreciate everyone who has suggested and pledged to help this fundraiser. Bless you all.

Love,
Corey, Amy & Holden
