Last month (January 2026), we received devastating news: our dear friend Corey Shen (known to many as “the Cat Sister”) has been diagnosed with Stage IV breast carcinoma. The cancer has already metastasized to her spine, specifically affecting T6 through L2 (Thoracic 6 to Lumbar 2). Corey is a talented UI/UX designer who has always embraced creativity and authentic connection. She is dedicated to sharing her warm heart and skills with her church and the wider community. Most recently, she launched a YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/@SVCatSisiter to document her treatment journey, hoping to inspire others in similar situations to stay hopeful and keep fighting. Having watched her begin this journey, we have come to know Corey as an incredibly brave woman who continues to smile every day, even while enduring significant pain

On February 23, she underwent a successful spine surgery at Stanford Hospital. She is currently under the care of a team of specialists at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center. Following radiation, spine surgery, and three weeks of intensive rehabilitation, she will begin a treatment plan combining chemotherapy and hormone therapy. Afterward, she will face another complicated procedure—breast surgery—followed by a lengthy hospital stay. Once she recovers from that, there will be further therapy ahead, potentially including immunotherapy. We hope to receive more detailed information from the medical team soon.
Corey is entering a long and challenging journey. She remains hopeful and grounded, praising the Lord every day. However, as an independent designer, she does not have access to benefits like employer-sponsored insurance or paid sick leave. Due to her grueling treatment schedule, she is currently unable to work. This means she is facing at least a year with almost no income while focusing all her strength on healing. As a single woman living in the Bay Area without other financial resources, this situation is extremely difficult.
If you have ever been touched by Corey’s warmth or her radiant smile, you already know what an extraordinary person she is. Corey is deeply committed to her recovery, but like anyone facing a battle this significant, she feels daunted at times. Asking for help does not come easily to her; in fact, she initially hoped to go through this quietly with only a small circle of support. Those of us who love her encouraged her to let the wider community show up for her.
We started this GoFundMe so Corey can focus entirely on healing—because financial stress should never be part of someone’s cancer journey. This is our chance, as her friends and community, to show her how much her spirit has given to us.
