Dear family, friends and to all of those of you who may or may not know Coral..

Coral is a 23 year old family oriented, adventurous, empathetic and driven woman. This past Saturday October 19th Coral was out with her boyfriends family celebrating his aunts 50th birthday party. Towards the end of the night Coral told her boyfriend (Zach) she was not feeling well due to having a history of asthma and being at a place where people were smoking. The smoke caused her asthma to flare up and she pulled her inhaler out of her purse thinking it would help. They left the party and on the drive home she started to feel better. But shortly after getting home things took a turn for the worst and she began to feel very short of breath. She tried using her inhaler and at home nebulizer treatments to help with her breathing and unfortunately had little success. She then told Zach she needed to go to the hospital because she barely could breathe so they headed to the car and took off to the hospital. Upon arrival to the hospital Coral was so weak that Zach needed to help get her inside and as soon as they walked into the hospital she collapsed in Zach’s arms. Zach called for help immediately and the medical staff came rushing out to get her back and started treating her. The medical staff tried to stabilize her breathing and unfortunately did not have success and had to intubate her right then and there. Doctors at Glencoe hospital determined she was experiencing a severe exacerbation of her asthma and decided that she needed to be transported to Abbott Northwestern for closer monitoring. She was admitted into the ICU at Abbott that night. Sunday October 20th the doctors ordered labs and tests to be done with the important scan being a brain MRI to make sure there was oxygen getting to the brain. All scans and labs came back good and normal. They tried to extubate her four times and had no success. The medical staff then decided it was best just to let her rest and try again the next day. Monday October 21st, Coral was extubated at 8:30am and is doing okay. She has no complaints of pain just a sore throat from the tube being down her throat. Lots of visits with different doctors and the plan is for her to start a new asthma medication regimen and to get studies done with a pulmonologist and from there continuing to follow up and see a pulmonologist. She is currently still in the hospital for another day or two depending on her breathing and how she is feeling overall. She will be moved hopefully today out of the ICU and to the medical/surgical floor. Those that know Coral know she does not like to ask for help but due to this unexpected situation and costly medical expenses we ask if you’re able to help donate to her, keep her in your prayers or even give your words of encouragement we’d appreciate it greatly!
