James’ Story - When James called PA211, he was out of food, behind on his mortgage, and in the dark, literally. His electricity had been shut off. A medical condition had kept him out of work since May, and while he was scheduled for surgery in early July, it would be at least six more weeks before he could return to work, hopefully. James wasn’t just worried about himself. He had two dogs he deeply loved but couldn’t feed.

Early in the call, he said he might need to give them up. He was rationing what little food he had left and considering entering a shelter. By the end of the call, things looked different. James was connected with food and pet supplies resources, and he learned about local assistance for utilities and housing support. With those lifelines in place, he didn’t have to say goodbye to his dogs—and he didn’t have to face the next few weeks alone. Sometimes, one conversation is all it takes to turn fear into hope.

Elaine's Story - As a parent, it is heart-wrenching to watch your child suffer. Elaine, 61 years old, called PA211 for help. She sounded sad and scared. Her daughter is unemployed, has no health benefits, and in need of mental health care. Elaine is barely getting by herself. Her monthly income is less than $1,250 per month. As Elaine shared the story of her daughter's struggles, the Resource Navigator began searching PA211's database for referrals. Elaine was provided referrals to Folium, the County Assistance Office, Family First Health, True Wellness, and OVR.

At the end of the call, Elaine felt reassured and had all the community agency information needed to help her daughter. “Thank you, you’ve been wonderful and I would not have known where to start without you. Thank you for your help”.
