When my neighbor Carla moved into the Midtown Global Market Lofts in Minneapolis in 2016, and described it to her sister-in-law the reply was: “Wow, you live on Sesame Street."
This converted Sears building in the heart of Minneapolis is everyone’s dream of community and diversity and opportunity and friendship. This is everything the planners hoped for and more. Multi-Use with a diverse clientele and businesses. A true miracle.
At the heart of this miracle is MAPPS COFFEE owned by Erdoan and Yildiz, one of the original businesses in the market. At 6:30 every morning Erdoan and Yildiz greet members of the market and the broader community by name. People from the condos, people from the apartments, people from Allina (located in the complex) people who walk to the market from the community on the way to work and give them their morning beverage. Because it's not just coffee. It's Chai. It's lattes. MAPPS COFFEE in the Midtown Global Market is what all of us dream about as not only the American Dream but our dream of a diverse and loving community.
This miracle is in danger. Covid took half of their clientele away because Allina, wisely went remote. The murder of George Floyd and its aftermath brought destruction and distrust to the neighborhood. Yet, a year later MAPPS is still here, and every day is better but it’s hard and now they might not make it. That would be a tragedy.
If you just gave $10 and asked two more people to give $10, we could make sure that at least one true miracle of our dreams and hopes for this country and our community does not fail but thrives, like it was before this disaster hit. Diverse and loving community for just ten bucks. What a deal.
