In December 2025 we vistited Kenya, and while in Nairobi we met some locals who invited us to play football in Mathare, one of the biggest slums in Africa.
We ended up playing a competitive match at a pitch called Rock City and were welcomed so openly by the community. We’re lucky to have played football all over the world, but this was one of the most epic football experiences we’ve ever had. Super privilege, the standard was top and the atmosphere was a madness.
At the same time, it was hard to ignore the level of poverty people are living with. These teams are doing everything they can with very little, and they’re missing basic things many of us take for granted. Kits, balls, bibs, even food for players around matches and training.
The daily struggle is real, and the long-term impact of colonialism and limited economic opportunity is still very present across East Africa, not least in Mathare.
This fundraiser is a small, practical way to support some friends there who are already using football to bring people together. We know this doesn’t solve anything, but access to football builds community, offers escapism, supports physical and mental wellbeing, and gives young people something positive to belong to.
Any money raised will go directly towards basic football equipment and support for local teams. No frills, just backing people who are already doing the work.
Thanks so much for reading, and for any support.
