Support Chartreuse - Used Art Supply Shop, Downtown Columbus

I am Heidi Clifford, a.k.a. Primary Child, and I run Primary Child Mural & Design Studio in Columbus, Ohio. I've worked professionally in Columbus for the last 7+ years as a muralist, installation artist, and designer, and have been involved with over a dozen arts non-profits throughout the city. I bring color to the world, connect communities with meaningful public art, and balance play within the art making.

With my friend Debra Lemak, we are starting an art supply reuse shop called Chartreuse in downtown and are seeking funding to get this initiative going. (The name Chartreuse stems from its spelling - Ch•art•reuse.)

Columbus does have art supply stores, but they are not near downtown and require creatives to plan a trip. Second, many creatives have art supplies that they no longer plan on using, but could be used by others. We are starting this initiative to provide better access to affordable, used art supplies, and to get more supplies into artists' hands.

In order to get this going, we will need to rent additional space and outfit that with organization items like shelving. We will be managing an inventory and price list, and have an intake system for supplies to reduce waste and make time efficient. Funds raised will also pay us for our time in this where possible, and anyone else we may need to hire in the process. We would like for this to function as a non-profit, and in all other intentions it will function as one though we must compensate ourselves for our work when at all possible.

Heidi has wanted to start this for the last couple of years, and has since researched other similar shops around the country. The concept of a free art supply store, or a pay-what-you-can art store is not new but we don’t have something like this currently in the city. There is a lot of local support for these initiatives, and we are excited to bring this to Columbus, too.
