Collin is a very active 9 year old who participates in basketball, soccer, hunting, and fishing AND he does it all with Type 1 diabetes! Collin has lived with this incurable disease for 3 years now. Since his diagnosis we have dreamed of having a Diabetes Alert Service Dog (DAD). A highly trained service dog is much more reliable than any device that we could use for blood sugar notifications- especially in the Alaskan bush. In the summer and early fall we live an off grid, outdoors lifestyle and a DAD would give us great peace of mind in regards to Collin's safety.
Here is the cost breakdown for a DAD:
$2,500 cost of puppy (unless providing your own dog/puppy)
$5,000 basic obedience training
$5,000 public access training
$6,000 scent training
$2,500 two day delivery to your city (optional)
Total: $16,000-$21,000
A minimum deposit to get on the waiting list is $500, the full deposit is $3,000. The full deposit is required before we can begin getting potential dog matches, once we select a dog the trainer will continue training that dog specifically for Collin. The waiting list with a full deposit would be two to three months, total time would be about nine months to a year including the training program.
Once we secure $3,000 for the full waitlist fee we can start applying for grant money to help us achieve our goal (many grants must see that you are actively pursuing a DAD with official documents and transaction details from the trainer).
Thank you!
