For 25 years, I’ve had the privilege of calling Stevie my friend. I’ve watched him lead young men on the football field, mentor athletes through life’s challenges, and pour his heart into his family and community. Now, the coach who has always been strong for everyone else is facing the toughest fight of his life.

Stevie is battling advanced kidney disease — a relentless opponent that has taken a serious toll on his health. Despite ongoing treatments and his trademark determination, complications have progressed to the point that doctors have made the heartbreaking decision that he must undergo a leg amputation to save his life.

For a man whose life has been built on strength, discipline, and perseverance, this news is unimaginable. Football has always been central to Stevie’s identity. For decades, he has taught young athletes how to push through adversity, fight for every yard, and never quit. Now, he is living the very lessons he has instilled in so many others.

Beyond the pain and fear that come with major surgery lies the overwhelming reality of what follows — recovery, rehabilitation, mobility adjustments, and the long road toward adapting to a new way of life. During this time, Stevie’s ability to work will be limited, placing additional strain on him and his family.

For 25 years, I’ve watched Stevie show up for his friends, his players, his family, and his community without hesitation. Now it’s our turn to show up for him.
