Support Coach D's Recovery from Stroke

Beloved Local Basketball Coach, Damion “Coach D” Staple, Needs Support After Suffering Stroke

This fundraiser will provide financial support for Damion and his family during his road to recovery. Two months ago, Damion suffered a stroke that left him without the use of his right arm and leg. While this was a devastating blow, Damion is showing the same grit and positivity he’s always encouraged in his players. Through intense physical therapy, he’s now walking again with a leg brace and a cane. He still cannot bend his right leg and does not have control over his right arm which remains in a sling. While his road to recovery will be long, his spirit remains unbreakable.

While his medical expenses are thankfully covered, Damion needs help with day-to-day living expenses and transportation costs to and from therapy. He also has a 3-year old son, Alex, and providing for his family during this time has been incredibly challenging.

Whether or not Coach D has impacted your life, your child’s life, or your community in any way, it would be great if could provide support. Whether it’s through a donation, a note of encouragement, or just spreading the word—every gesture counts.

Hi, my name is Gregg Menell and I’m a longtime resident of Westchester, New York. I first met Damion "Coach D" Staple when he coached my daughter’s middle school basketball team a decade ago. From the moment he stepped into the gym, Coach D stood out—not just because he’s a 6’7” gentle giant but because of his radiant smile, his calming presence, and the inspiring way he connected with the kids.

Coach D continued training and mentoring kids in our community, including my son, who joined his AAU team when he was 9. We became part of the SYO Family (Staple Youth Organization) and got to watch our kids thrive in the supportive and inclusive community built around Coach D’s passion for youth development, basketball, and teamwork.

What’s always stood out most about Coach D is how deeply he cares about his players. His players know it. Their families know it. And that’s why they give that love and respect right back.

He also gave back off the court. From organizing local charity events to supporting underprivileged youth in Jamaica (where he grew up), Damion has always looked for ways to lift others up.

Now it’s our turn to cheer him on and lift him up.

He still has his infectious smile, especially when hearing from his players. However, he’s facing an uncertain future and doesn’t know if or when he will be able to coach again. Understandably, this has left him sad and frustrated.

Anything you can do to support this kind and impactful man would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Gregg
