CJ is my 15-year-old sister, and her strength has amazed us all. Early in January, she found out she was pregnant, and after just two prenatal appointments, doctors discovered she had been leaking amniotic fluid. After her second appointment, our mom had to rush her from Butte to Missoula in an emergency two-hour drive, where she was admitted to the Antepartum unit for observation through her high-risk pregnancy. We knew from the start that the baby would likely arrive early due to the complications and lack of amniotic fluid. After two weeks in the hospital, CJ went into labor in the middle of the night and delivered her baby boy, Waylon, at exactly 11:11 am. The NICU team immediately took Waylon into intensive care, where he is receiving all the support he needs to grow stronger.

CJ’s insurance will thankfully cover most of her hospital stay, delivery, and Waylon’s time in the NICU. However, with Waylon needing to remain in intensive care, it’s crucial for CJ to stay as close as possible for his “care times,” to pump breast milk for him, and to be there for every milestone. We had hoped CJ could stay at the Ronald McDonald House, but because of her age, she isn’t eligible. Now, we’re searching for short-term housing in Missoula, which could last up to four months and comes with many expenses—not including her basic needs like hygiene, nutrition, and transportation.
